Heartstopper Forever: Netflix Announces 2026 Feature Film Finale for Groundbreaking LGBTQ+ Series
The story follows Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) as they navigate a long‑distance romance when Nick departs for university while Charlie stays in Truham to finish his exams. A vibrant Pride celebration in the fictional town anchors the film’s climax, a moment the actors say will deliver a striking visual of queer joy to audiences.
The series itself began as a webcomic and graphic novel by Alice Oseman, who penned every episode of the three‑season Netflix adaptation. Premiering on 22 April 2022, the show released its second season on 3 August 2023 and the third on 3 October 2024. It has consistently landed in Netflix’s Global Top 10 and amassed more than 53 million hours of viewership in the first three weeks of its inaugural season. Critics have lauded the show’s warm, affirming portrayal of sexuality, mental health, and bullying, earning accolades that include a Children’s and Family Emmy for Outstanding Young Teen Series.
In a statement on the company’s media site, Netflix announced that the film will be available even in territories where homosexuality is criminalised, a move the platform says reflects its commitment to inclusive representation.
Heartstopper Forever is directed by Wash Westmoreland and written by Oseman. Connor and Locke will serve as producers, a role that, according to the actors, lets them shape the story and support the cast. Locke noted that the production process was rigorous, with more than 10 000 applicants for the open casting call that ultimately brought in the series’ leads.
"The content works well as a film and final chapter," Connor told the BBC. "We’ve been through so much with these characters, and it’s important for audiences to see this on‑screen representation, wherever we are in the world and whatever the powers that be are doing."
Locke added, "The show has changed my life in pretty much every way. It’s the biggest thing that will ever happen to any of us. I value Joe as a friend, and if we work together again that’s great, but he’s a great actor and I love watching his work."
The film will explore heavy themes such as eating disorders, mental health, alcohol dependency and difficult family dynamics. It will also feature a trans character, Elle Argent (Yasmin Finney), who addresses real‑life issues faced by transgender people.
Netflix’s 2026 release strategy for Heartstopper Forever follows a pattern of high‑profile, genre‑specific content. The platform currently boasts 325 million paid memberships in more than 190 countries, with original programming accounting for half of its U.S. library. By positioning Heartstopper as a flagship LGBTQ+ title, the company notes that the series has boosted sales of Oseman’s books and increased streams of songs featured on the soundtrack.
The film will go live at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, allowing U.S. viewers to start streaming at 3 a.m. Eastern Time. It will be available in multiple languages and subtitles, in line with Netflix’s global distribution model.
As the series draws to a close, fans can expect Heartstopper Forever to deliver a cinematic conclusion that has resonated with millions worldwide. The release will also underscore the importance of inclusive storytelling and the role streaming platforms play in bringing diverse narratives to a broad audience.
The final chapter will be available on Netflix from 17 July 2026, and it is expected to be a key title for the platform’s LGBTQ+ content portfolio in the coming months.
