When Madonna turned the spotlight on her own story, the plan to film a biopic hit an unexpected wall.

In a candid interview with Interview magazine, the pop icon confirmed that a feature film chronicling her life—set to star Julia Garner—was cancelled after a budget dispute with Universal Pictures. Madonna said she had spent two years crafting a script and another two years negotiating with the studio’s line producers when the project fell apart.

“I was supposed to make a movie about my life,” Madonna told the magazine. “I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios with the line producers doing budgeting and casting.” She added that Universal could not agree to the level of funding she required, leading to a “falling out” over finances.

The singer also revealed that she had explored a lower‑cost production plan in Serbia. “I could have filmed the biopic for a smaller budget in that country,” she said, but Universal rejected the idea, reportedly questioning whether she would stay in Serbia for more than four days. Madonna described the studio’s reaction as a sign that they did not believe in her vision.

The project was originally intended to be directed by Madonna herself, with Garner cast in the lead role. Garner, known for her work on Ozark and Inventing Anna, had been selected after a competitive audition process. The film was expected to balance Madonna’s “extraordinary life” with a “grittier” script that the singer preferred, while Universal favored a lighter, pop‑oriented tone.

After the Universal deal collapsed, Madonna said Netflix approached her about creating a limited series based on her life. She noted that she would have to purchase the script from Universal at a high price, which she described as an “extortionist’s price.” The singer explained that developing a television series required a different process, involving writers and a showrunner, and that she was unable to secure a suitable partner.

In the months that followed, Madonna’s plans for a series stalled. She said she spent eight or nine months trying to find a writer and a showrunner, but the project did not materialise. Ultimately, she decided to focus on her music career.

Madonna’s new studio album, Confessions II, is scheduled for release on July 3. The singer has said that the album was created while dealing with personal losses, including the deaths of her brother Christopher Ciccone and stepmother Joan Ciccone. She has also mentioned that the themes of death and renewal in the album mirror the narrative arc she had envisioned for the biopic.

The cancellation of the film highlights the challenges that high‑profile artists face when attempting to bring personal stories to the screen. Budget negotiations can stall projects even when a star’s name and a notable cast are attached. The case also illustrates how streaming platforms like Netflix are increasingly courting biographical content, though the transition from film to television can involve complex rights and financial arrangements.

Universal Studios has not issued a statement regarding the project’s termination. Madonna’s public comments are the primary source of information about the dispute.

The biopic’s cancellation leaves open the possibility of future adaptations. Madonna’s involvement in a limited series remains uncertain, and the singer’s focus appears to be on her upcoming album and related touring plans.

Industry observers note that the situation underscores the importance of aligning creative vision with financial feasibility. While Madonna’s desire for a large budget reflects the scale of her career, studios often weigh projected returns against production costs. The outcome may influence how other artists approach biographical projects in the future.

The story also reflects broader trends in entertainment, where artists increasingly seek control over their narratives through self‑directed projects or collaborations with streaming services. Whether Madonna will revisit a biopic or pursue a different format remains to be seen.

For now, fans can anticipate the release of Confessions II and the singer’s continued presence in the music industry.
