Karthik Subbaraj Announces Dorothy - Tamil Directors Tenth Film to Premiere at TIFF 2026
Dorothy assembles a strong ensemble led by Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth. The score will be composed by veteran maestro Ilaiyaraaja, marking the first time the legendary composer has worked with Subbaraj. Tirru, the director’s frequent collaborator, will handle cinematography. Production is a joint effort by Sikhya Entertainment, Jio Studios, and Subbaraj’s own Dhammam Films, with Guneet Monga, Achin Jain, and Jyoti Deshpande credited as producers.
Subbaraj described the film as a story that is “very close to my heart” and one he has wanted to make for many years. On X, he added that the themes are personal and that the project finally materialised after years of development. His previous film, Retro, opened on May 1, 2025 and was noted for its experimental storytelling.
The film will be screened in TIFF’s Centrepiece section, which showcases feature‑length works from a range of national cinemas. The 2026 edition of the festival runs from September 8 to 18, positioning Dorothy among a slate of international releases vying for critical attention.
Dorothy is a psychological drama that explores identity, caste, masculinity, and compassion through deeply human characters rather than spectacle. Subbaraj has said the narrative examines social structures and personal agency—themes that have appeared in his earlier work.
Ilaiyaraaja’s involvement is significant, given his status as one of India’s most prolific composers. Subbaraj has expressed that working with the maestro feels “special” after growing up listening to his music, and the collaboration is expected to add a distinctive sonic layer to the film’s thematic concerns.
From a distribution standpoint, the film will hit Indian screens on September 25, 2026, following its festival premiere. While specific distribution partners beyond the production companies have not been disclosed, the partnership with Jio Studios suggests a potential digital rollout on the platform’s streaming service.
At present, Dorothy is in the final stages of production. The release schedule positions it to benefit from the heightened visibility that comes with a TIFF premiere, potentially opening doors to international markets and further festival screenings. The project’s completion will add to Subbaraj’s growing filmography, which already includes Petta (2016), Retro (2025), and earlier shorts.
In short, Dorothy marks Karthik Subbaraj’s tenth feature, featuring a prominent cast, a first collaboration with Ilaiyaraaja, and a premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. The film is set for theatrical release on September 25, 2026 and will probe themes of identity, caste, masculinity, and compassion within a psychological drama framework.
