Prime Video Cancels Spider-Noir After One Season, Despite Emmy Success
The eight‑episode noir adventure, produced by Sony Pictures Television in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, premiered on MGM+ in the United States on May 25 2026. Two days later, a global Prime Video launch rolled out both color and black‑and‑white versions. It follows Ben Reilly, a seasoned private investigator who doubles as a 1930s New York City Spider‑Man, played by Nicolas Cage. The series was conceived by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, with Uziel serving as the primary showrunner.
Announced in February 2023, production began in August 2024 and wrapped in March 2025. Critics lauded Cage’s performance and the show’s atmospheric aesthetic, and a report cited 2.6 billion viewing minutes on Prime Video. Yet, despite the acclaim, Prime Video opted not to renew Spider‑Noir for a second season.
In a Variety interview, Uziel clarified that the cancellation was not a reflection of audience size or quality. "We haven’t gotten there yet. I literally do not know the legalities and complications of that," he said, referring to a possible revival on Amazon or sale to another platform. He also explained that the series was intentionally closed‑ended: "We made a very closed‑ended show. There’s a reason we were honoring these old noirs. The story begins when the client comes into the private detective’s office, and it ends when they solve the case."
Uziel expressed regret over not being able to reunite the original cast and crew: "My biggest regret about not having another season is that I don’t get to do it again with these people. I don’t have the show or the movie lined up to get everybody back together."
Cage, who voiced Spider‑Man Noir in the 2018 animated film Spider‑Man: Into the Spider‑Verse, said he would welcome the chance to advise or participate in future Sony‑produced Spider‑Man projects. "They have people working on all those things. I would always love to advise and take part because I loved it. I know what the challenges are and what the rewards can be," he told reporters.
Sony Pictures Television is reportedly developing a new Spider‑Man series for Prime Video, though no lead actor or release date has been confirmed. Sony owns more than 900 characters tied to the Spider‑Man franchise, providing a broad pool for future projects.
The cancellation follows the recent release of Brand New Day, the first live‑action Spider‑Man film starring Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the film and the television series occupy different continuities, both belong to Sony’s broader strategy to expand Spider‑Man content across media.
Prime Video has not released a statement explaining the specific reasons for the decision. Industry observers note that the series’ strong Emmy performance did not translate into a renewal, suggesting that viewership metrics or strategic priorities may have influenced the outcome.
No official announcement has been made regarding a second season or a replacement series. Sony’s upcoming Spider‑Man projects remain in development, with an expectation that a new title will surface in the coming months.
Spider‑Noir remains available for streaming on Prime Video, where fans can still enjoy the eight‑episode run in both color and black‑and‑white editions.
