When the lights dimmed on 4 November 2020 in Bengaluru, Bollywood lost a former 1990s leading man whose early promise had been eclipsed by illness.

Faraaz Khan, 50, succumbed to complications that began as a chest infection and evolved into a neurological disorder. He spent his final days in the intensive‑care unit of Vikram Hospital, where doctors fought to keep him alive.

Khan’s path to the silver screen was marked by a missed opportunity that would change the course of two careers. In 1989, a NDTV report noted that he was the original choice to play the hero in Sooraj Barjatya’s romantic blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya. A serious illness forced him to withdraw, and the role was subsequently given to Salman Khan, who would go on to become a superstar. Undeterred, Khan debuted a few years later with the psychological thriller Fareb (1996), directed by Vikram Bhatt. The film positioned him as a leading man and earned him recognition.

He went on to appear in Prithvi alongside Suniel Shetty, the 1998 film Mehndi where he played Rani Mukerji’s husband, and later projects such as Dulhan Banoo Main Teri (1999) and Chand Bujh Gaya (2005). After a slowdown in film offers, Khan shifted focus to television. His credits include Achanak 37 Saal Baad, Lipstick, Ssshhhh…Koi Hai, Raat Hone Ko Hai, and Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka. His final acting role was in the TV series Neeli Aankhen (2008).

In October 2020, Khan’s health deteriorated after a chest infection that had lingered for more than a year. He was admitted to Vikram Hospital in Bengaluru for treatment of a neurological disorder and remained in critical condition. The news sparked a fundraising campaign on social media, led by actress Pooja Bhatt, who urged fans to contribute to his medical expenses.

During this period, Salman Khan reportedly stepped forward to help cover Khan’s hospital bills. Actress Kashmera Shah shared a post on Khan’s Instagram account, thanking Salman for paying the medical expenses and describing him as a genuine person in the industry. The support from Salman and the fundraising effort brought hope to fans who were praying for Khan’s recovery.

Khan’s death was confirmed by Pooja Bhatt in a post on her social media account, where she expressed a heavy heart and thanked everyone who had offered help, support, and prayers. His brother, actor Fahmaan Khan, also expressed gratitude toward Salman Khan for his assistance during the actor’s illness.

Although Khan’s film career was brief, he remains remembered for his performances in Fareb and Mehndi. His story highlights the challenges faced by actors whose careers are cut short by health issues and the importance of industry solidarity during personal crises.

The entertainment community continues to reflect on Khan’s contributions, and his legacy is preserved through the films and television shows he appeared in during the late 1990s and early 2000s. His passing marks the loss of a talented actor whose early promise was never fully realized on the silver screen.
