On July 19, a new chapter in the Cyborg 009 saga opens its doors at 12:00 a.m. JST, bringing Shōtarō Ishinomori’s iconic manga to a fresh audience.

Ishimori Production’s latest adaptation, Cyborg 009: Nemesis, will launch simultaneously on a broad swath of Japanese streaming platforms—including Abema Premium, d Anime Store, U‑NEXT, Anime Hōdai, Prime Video, DMM TV, and others—allowing fans to jump straight into the action.

The series centers on Black Ghost, a shadowy organization that captures nine men and women and turns them into cyborg soldiers. As the plot unfolds, the cyborgs rebel against their creators and confront the very forces that forged them. According to the studio’s announcement, Yūki Kaji will voice the titular hero, Joe Shimamura, better known as Cyborg 009. The remaining nine cyborgs are voiced by Yuu Hayashi (Cyborg 008/Pyunma), Kentarō Tone (Cyborg 007/Great Britain), Mitsuaki Kanuka (Cyborg 006/Chang Changku), Hiroki Yasumoto (Cyborg 005/Geronimo Junior), Tomokazu Sugita (Cyborg 004/Albert Heinrich), Saori Hayami (Cyborg 003/Francois Alnul), Mamoru Miyano (Cyborg 002/Jet Link), and Junko Minagawa (Cyborg 001/Ivan Whiskey).

Adding depth to the roster, the website has been unveiling a new member of the Nemesis group each week. The announced voices include Yūichi Nakamura (Graviton/Nemesis 009), Ayane Sakura (Deps/Nemesis 008), Maaya Uchida (Morphone/Nemesis 007), Shion Wakayama (Blitz/Nemesis 006), Tetsu Inada (Aspida/Nemesis 005), Kikuko Inoue (Opro/Nemesis 004), Hiroshi Kamiya (Crack/Nemesis 003), Yoshimasa Hosoya (Blizzard/Nemesis 002), and Rina Hidaka (Mu/Nemesis 001).

The creative helm sits with Hideki Ambo, directing at Arect, while Atsuhiro Tomioka and the studio CHARATEX pen the screenplay. Sanorin brings the characters to life with fresh designs, and the opening theme, “Taga Tame ni” (For Whom), is performed by Kyōko of the rock band Barbee Boys. The song harks back to the original 1979 anime, written by Ishinomori himself and first performed by Ken Narita and Koorogi '73.

Cyborg 009 first appeared in July 1964 in Shōnen King magazine, and its legacy has spanned television series (1968, 1979, 2001), live‑action films (1966, 1967, 1980), the 2012 feature 009 Re:Cyborg, the 2016 trilogy Cyborg 009: Call of Justice, and a 2015 OVA crossover with Devilman. Recent iterations include Tsuguo Okazaki’s Cyborg 009 Bgooparts Delete (2019‑2022) and Masaki Tsuji with Masato Hayase’s Cyborg 009 Taiheiyō no Bōrei (Ghost of the Pacific) launched in April 2024.

With its July 19 debut, Cyborg 009: Nemesis re‑introduces the franchise’s enduring themes of identity, rebellion, and the ethics of technology to a new generation. The simultaneous, multi‑platform release reflects Japan’s current digital‑distribution trend, ensuring that both longtime fans and newcomers can access the series on their preferred service.

The anime is slated for a summer 2026 launch, and no additional dates for further episodes or seasons have been disclosed. Fans can anticipate that the series will be available on the same platforms that hosted the original 1979 anime, preserving continuity for long‑time followers.

Combining a classic theme song, a star‑studded voice cast, and a seasoned production team, Cyborg 009: Nemesis positions itself as a notable entry in the 2026 anime lineup. As the series rolls out, industry observers will track its reception across streaming services and its impact on the enduring legacy of Ishinomori’s work.
