Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel Reunite to Celebrate 25 Years of Bollywood Blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha
The celebration mirrored the milestone reached by Lagaan—another 2001 hit that opened on the same day as Gadar—and underscored the enduring legacy of both films. Guests enjoyed a cake‑cutting ritual, posed for group photographs, and listened to a live rendition of the film’s iconic soundtrack performed by Udit Narayan.
In a heartfelt Instagram post dated 15 June, Sunny Deol thanked fans for a quarter‑century of support: “25 Years Ago Gadar and Tara Singh conquered your hearts. 25 saal se pyaar ke rishte ki gaddi chall rahi aur aage bhi chalti hi rahegi. Thank you all for giving all of us 25 years of abundant love and making us stay in your hearts, hope we keep staying there.” The actor also shared a series of stills that highlighted the movie’s most dramatic moments.
Director Anil Sharma offered a glimpse into the film’s early days, recalling how he secured the project. According to reports, Sharma met actress Raakhee through a mutual friend and pitched the story to her. He said that Raakhee, who was 21 at the time, gave him ten minutes to explain the plot but listened for three hours before approving the film. Sharma added that he paid the signing fee with a ₹1,001 note from his aunt, a small amount compared to the ₹51,000 that Raakhee normally demanded.
The event also welcomed actor Mushtaq Khan and his wife Salma Khan, as well as Rajat Bedi, who had collaborated with Sharma on The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003). Utkarsh Sharma, who portrayed the teenage son Charanjeet in Gadar, shared his experience in a Rediff interview, noting that the role came because the production needed a child actor and he fit the required age.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha remains a landmark in Hindi cinema. Produced on a budget of roughly ₹190 million (US$4.03 million), the film grossed over ₹1.33 billion (US$28.19 million) worldwide, making it the highest‑grossing Hindi film of its era. It attracted more than 50 million viewers in India and was later recognized as the second most‑watched Indian film since the 1980s. The soundtrack, composed by Uttam Singh with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, featured enduring hits such as “Udja Kale Kawan” and “Main Nikla Gaddi Leke.”
In 2023, the franchise returned with Gadar 2, which saw Deol, Patel, and Sharma reprise their roles. The sequel performed strongly at the box office, reaffirming the series’ popularity. While no new projects were announced during the anniversary gathering, Anil Sharma hinted that a third installment could be considered if a suitable storyline emerged.
The 25‑year celebration underscored Gadar’s lasting impact on Indian cinema and its unwavering fan base. As the franchise continues to resonate with audiences, its cultural resonance remains a testament to a story that blends love and patriotism with cinematic spectacle.
