Legendary Entertainment Secures Film Rights to SenLinYus Dark Fantasy Alchemised
On June 16, 2026, Legendary announced that it has acquired the exclusive motion‑picture rights to Alchemised, the debut novel by American writer SenLinYu. The company stated that the project is in the early stages of pre‑production and that no release date or cast has yet been announced.
Alchemised began life as a fanfiction story called Manacled, which combined elements of the Harry Potter series and The Handmaid’s Tale. The original fanfiction, published between 2018 and 2019, was an adult dystopian romance that placed Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy in a dark alternate universe. SenLinYu’s online works had accumulated more than 16 million downloads by 2024 and were translated into 19 languages.
In September 2025, SenLinYu published Alchemised through Del Rey in the United States and the Penguin imprint Michael Joseph in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. The book is described as dark fantasy, horror and gothic romance and follows Helena Marino, a former alchemist who must recover fragmented memories of a civil war while confronting a necromancer who seeks to unlock her hidden knowledge. Alchemised reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list in the week after its release.
Legendary’s announcement came after the studio’s recent acquisition of the rights, reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The studio has no official release window for the film, and the project remains in pre‑production. While no actors have been confirmed, fan speculation has mentioned names such as Damian Hardung, Tom Blyth, Callum Turner or Finn Bennett for the role of Kaine, and Chase Infiniti, Rachel Zegler, Adria Arjona or Alisha Boe for Helena.
The move reflects a broader trend of studios adapting popular fanfiction into mainstream properties. Legendary’s catalog includes high‑profile titles such as Dune, Inception and Interstellar, and the studio’s interest in Alchemised signals confidence in the commercial potential of adult fantasy narratives that originated in fan communities.
At present, the film’s production schedule, distribution plan and release date remain unknown. Fans of the novel can still purchase the book, which was released on September 23 2025, while the studio continues to develop the project.
The current status is that Legendary Entertainment holds the rights and is in early pre‑production. No further details on casting, filming, or release are available, and the project will likely remain in development for the foreseeable future.
