Jim Carrey Open to The Mask Sequel, but Only if the Idea Is Right
The Mask premiered in the United States on July 29, 1994. The film, directed by Chuck Russell and based on a 1991 Dark Horse comic series, earned $351.6 million worldwide against a production budget of $18–23 million. It was the fourth‑highest‑grossing film of 1994 and helped launch Carrey’s career after his success in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
A sequel, Son of the Mask, was released in 2005 but did not feature Carrey or Russell. The film starred Jamie Kennedy and was directed by Lawrence Guterman. It received overwhelmingly negative reviews for its screenplay, visual effects, and lack of the original cast. With a budget estimated between $84 million and $100 million, it grossed only $59.9 million worldwide and is widely regarded as a box‑office bomb.
In the recent interview, Carrey emphasized that a new Mask movie would not be a financial decision. "It has to be the right idea," he said. "It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… but I never know." The comment echoes earlier statements that Carrey has stepped back from leading‑man roles since 2014’s Dumb and Dumber To and has focused on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
Cameron Diaz, who co‑starred in the original film, also expressed willingness to return if Carrey did. In a 2025 interview, Diaz said she would reprise her role only if the project included Carrey.
Chuck Russell, who directed the 1994 film, has spoken about a potential sequel in interviews with ComicBookMovie. Russell said, "There’s always talk about it… it would be lovely to return, but we’ll see. It’s not ready yet, but that’s a lovely idea." Russell’s recent work has focused on horror and action projects such as Witchboard (2024) and The Scorpion King (2002). Since 2002 he has directed only four films, none of which have matched the commercial success of The Mask.
Given Carrey’s limited recent leading roles and Russell’s sparse output, the likelihood of a new Mask film with the original cast remains low. No studio has announced a production schedule, and no release date has been set. The franchise has not been revived in any form, and the only active sequel project is the 2005 Son of the Mask, which is already considered a commercial failure.
As of now, the future of The Mask franchise is uncertain. While Carrey and Diaz have indicated openness to a return, and Russell has expressed a willingness to revisit the material, no concrete plans have emerged. The film’s legacy continues to be celebrated in retrospectives and fan discussions, but a new installment has yet to move beyond speculation.
