Bridgerton Season 5 Set for 2027 Release; Daphne and Simons Romance Concluded
The first season of Bridgerton, which debuted on December 25 2020, followed the courtship of Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter of the Bridgerton family, and Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings. The story concluded with the couple’s marriage, and the series moved away from their relationship in subsequent seasons. Regé‑Jean Page, who played Simon, did not return after season 1, and Phoebe Dynevor, who played Daphne, made limited appearances in season 2. The show shifted focus to other siblings, such as Anthony Bridgerton and his romance with Kate, and later to Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington in season 3 and Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek in season 4.
According to Variety, showrunner Jess Brownell said the series is open to reunions of former cast members, but no concrete plans have been announced. Brownell also clarified that the show is not interested in recasting the roles of Daphne or Simon, stating that doing so would be a “disservice” to the actors’ work.
Season 5 will feature a new lead couple: Francesca Bridgerton, the youngest Bridgerton sister, and Michaela Stirling, her late husband’s cousin. The season will explore a queer romance and will be the first time the series presents a same‑gender relationship. Brownell discussed the new storyline in interviews with Tudum and Variety, noting that the show will continue to adapt the structure of Julia Quinn’s novels while introducing fresh narrative elements.
The series has released four seasons to date. Season 2 premiered on March 25 2022. Season 3 was released in two parts, on May 16 and June 13 2024. Season 4 was also released in two parts, on January 29 and February 26 2026. Bridgerton has been renewed for a fifth season, and Netflix confirmed the 2027 release during its 2026 upfront presentation.
Bridgerton is based on the book series by Julia Quinn and is Shondaland’s first scripted show for Netflix. The series has received positive reviews for its direction, performances, and production design, and has earned several awards, including five Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and a Grammy nomination for its score.
In summary, the show has moved beyond the Daphne‑Simon romance, and the focus has shifted to other Bridgerton siblings. Season 5 will introduce a new central couple and a queer storyline, with filming expected to begin in 2026. No recasting of the original couple is planned, and any future reunions would depend on scheduling and narrative fit.
