Tracy Morgan to Receive Inaugural Flip Wilson Award at 8th Annual AAFCA TV Honors
The honor, announced in a press release from the AAFCA, pays tribute to performers whose comedic craft and cultural influence echo the legacy of Flip Wilson, the pioneering Black comedian who hosted the 1970s variety series The Flip Wilson Show. The award will be handed out during a gala that also crowns winners in 13 categories covering television and streaming achievements.
The 2026 ceremony marks the eighth iteration of the AAFCA’s TV Honors, a tradition that began in 2019. Winners for the competitive categories were revealed on July 1, and additional presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.
Flip Wilson, who rose to national prominence in the early 1970s, was the first Black comedian to host a successful network variety show. His program ran from 1970 to 1974 and introduced iconic characters such as Geraldine. Wilson earned a Golden Globe, two Emmy Awards, and a Grammy for his 1970 album The Devil Made Me Buy This Dress. The new award seeks to honor artists who, like Wilson, broaden the cultural reach of comedy.
Morgan’s selection follows a career that has spanned stage, sketch comedy, and scripted television. He performed on Saturday Night Live from 1996 to 2003, portrayed Tracy Jordan on NBC’s 30 Rock from 2006 to 2013, and led the TBS comedy The Last O.G.. In 2026 he stars in NBC’s sitcom The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, a series praised for its humor and social commentary. Morgan has received multiple Primetime Emmy nominations for his work on SNL and 30 Rock.
The AAFCA will also bestow special honors on several industry leaders. Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz, will receive the TV Vanguard Award for championing ambitious, culturally relevant programming. Celeste Hughey, writer‑producer of Peacock’s The ’Burbs, will be honored with the Impact Award for reimagining the cult classic with a modern, Black‑female lead. Sony Pictures Television’s senior vice‑president of current programming, Lamar Chase, will receive the Horizon Award for his focus on culturally resonant storytelling and emerging talent. Finally, Felicia Pride—known for her work on Bel‑Air, Grey’s Anatomy, Queen Sugar, and the Netflix romance film Really Love—will be recognized with the Salute to Excellence Award for her career‑long commitment to authentic representation of Black women.
Founded in 2003, the AAFCA is the world’s largest group of Black film critics. Its mission is to amplify Black voices in film criticism and entertainment journalism, and its TV Honors gala has become a key platform for celebrating diverse storytelling and the achievements of Black creators across television and streaming.
The August 8 ceremony will spotlight the continued influence of Black talent in entertainment. While the Flip Wilson Award establishes a new tradition, the event’s broader focus on competitive categories and special honors underscores the AAFCA’s commitment to recognizing excellence that shapes contemporary media.
After the announcement of the 13 category winners on July 1, viewers can expect a showcase of the year’s most impactful television and streaming content, along with a celebration of the individuals who have pushed the boundaries of representation and creativity.
