Geena Davis Joins Amazon MGM Action Film The Kellys With Schwarzenegger and Hemsworth
The Kellys centers on Jack Kelly, a disgraced New York City police officer whose wife, Molly, is taken hostage by terrorists inside an abandoned armory. According to the script by Brad Peyton and Tze Chun, Kelly must confront his past and enlist the help of those he most distrusts—his own family—to rescue her. Peyton, known for directing high‑energy projects such as San Andreas and Rampage, will helm the film, while Thunder Road Films, founded by Basil Iwanyk, co‑produces the venture. The cast also features Kelsey Asbille as Kelly’s daughter and Abby Elliott in a supporting role. The film also includes Liam Hemsworth as a former partner turned adversary.
Amazon MGM Studios, the result of Amazon’s 2023 merger with MGM Holdings, announced earlier this week that it had acquired The Kellys for its streaming platform Prime Video. The acquisition, reported by Deadline, positions the studio to deliver a new action title to a global audience, with the film slated for availability in more than 240 countries and territories. The move follows Amazon MGM’s strategy to expand its library of original content and compete with other streaming services that have invested heavily in high‑budget action franchises. The studio’s partnership with Thunder Road Films brings additional production expertise to the project.
Geena Davis’s addition to the cast follows a series of recent high‑profile projects. She appears in the Netflix science‑fiction mystery The Boroughs, which premiered on May 21 and features a cast that includes Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, and Clarke Peters. In film, Davis has worked with director Zoë Kravitz on Blink Twice and appeared in Sofia Coppola’s Fairyland. Her next on‑screen outing is the stoner comedy The Wrong Girls, produced by Neon, where she co‑stars with Kristen Stewart, Alia Shawkat, Seth Rogen, and LaKeith Stanfield. Davis is represented by CAA, Untitled Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller. Davis earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1989 for The Accidental Tourist and has since championed gender equality in media through her Geena Davis Institute.
The inclusion of Davis, a seasoned actress with a career spanning over four decades, adds gravitas to a film that already boasts a high‑profile ensemble. Thunder Road Films, known for producing action‑driven titles such as The Town and The Departed, brings a track record of commercial success to the production. Brad Peyton’s direction is expected to deliver the kinetic pacing that audiences have come to expect from his previous work. Amazon MGM’s decision to feature Davis also signals the studio’s intent to diversify its action offerings with actors who bring both star power and critical credibility. The film’s release schedule is still under development, but industry insiders expect a 2027 theatrical window followed by a Prime Video premiere.
At present, no official release date has been announced for The Kellys, and Davis’s character remains undisclosed. The film is expected to enter production in late 2026, with principal photography slated to begin in early 2027. Amazon MGM has indicated that the project will be part of its broader strategy to bolster Prime Video’s action catalog, which has seen recent successes such as The Last Duel and The Power of the Dog. Fans of Davis can look forward to her next appearance in The Wrong Girls, scheduled for release in 2028.
